No Texture Please...

I had purchased a book of textured paper just to try out for my permanent marker drawings. After several attempts to work with the paper I realize I don't like it at all. The texture eats up my pen and I can't get as smooth, or fine, of details as I would like. As you can see from this sketch the lines are not as smooth as some previous drawings. I am glad I tried it however, it has been a good way to work on pen control, precision, and pressure.

This sketch is from my Vegas Journal. I have no clue what to call it...any suggestions?

Bubbles

This drawing reminds me of how bubbles float to the surface of water. It also reminds me of bubbles in a glass of soda.

Jeremy's Boots

This picture was commissioned by my dad. It was drawn from a picture of my nephew wearing boots and spurs. My mom had it framed and it now belongs to my eldest sister.

I think my mom did a great job. If I am correct she refurbished the frame herself.

My Mother's Hippo

This was a product of two college art classes. I think I started this as a sophomore and finished it as a senior. The entire time I was painting it my mother kept calling it "that Hippo painting" (for all of you who are confused it really is a rhinoceros). I painted it from a photograph in a National Graphic Magazine. In all the moving we have done since then the page I tore from the Magazine got destroyed. I have been trying to find another copy but haven't had any luck yet. Do you know how hard it is to find a specific picture when you don't know which volume, or date, or even year, it was published in? This is one of those times I wish I had taken better notes, or at least paid better attention.

Splash

Another drawing inspired by one of the shows we saw while on vacation. This show was a water show with acrobatics, diving, and synchronized swimming.

Mystery

While on vacation this last week we went to a few shows. This image is inspired by one of them. The show was full of acrobatics and tricks. The cast dressed in wild costumes depicting creatures which looked like exotic birds and other strange creatures. It was rather crazy but had some really fun and captivating moments.

Misty Morning

I worked on several drawings while on vacation this last week. This is one of them. It reminds me of how mist seems to float through the air in the fall.

Fall

Fall is probably my favorite season. Here is a permanent marker drawing that was inspired by fall.

Words

Here is another poem I wrote a while back, when I was reminded how important effective communication is and how tough it can be to achieve.

My words are not always bold.
Sometimes dim and sometimes old,
new, bright, thin, or cold.
Mostly clean, or with a little mold.
Sometimes smart...or so I'm told.
Some words they come with crease and fold,
often loose and hard to hold.
Some are tight and neatly rolled,
packed and wrapped, but never sold.
Some like teeth they must be pulled,
and some, like cattle, should be culled.

(The picture is another one of my permanent marker drawings... I was playing with words.... sorry, I couldn't help it.)

Work in Progress

Here is a piece I've been working on for a while...meaning, I painted the background and set it aside for the entire summer. It's still far from being done. I am hoping for bright colors and a festive feel.

Something Different

Every once in a while I like to try something different. I love branching out and trying different forms of art. It is fun to see what I create, but even better when I find something I really enjoy. I haven't decided how I feel about poetry, however I have written a few pieces. Good or bad it was fun to try.

When my oldest daughter was born I wrote this poem.

***

She is the image of true beauty
in body, mind, and spirit.
I am captivated by her,
as if I am narcissus staring at my own reflection.
I cannot pull myself away,
afraid she will vanish in an instant.
Her soul is pure and unblemished.
She is a gift to this world,
              ...entrusted to my care.
I am blessed beyond all measure,
euphoric, and afraid.
She is my baby,
my joy,
my pain,
my love,
my future.

Something Red

Here is a series I developed specifically for the annual "Something Red" art show held in my hometown each December. The show allowed two entries per artist, so only the first two were entered and accepted last year. I am curious to hear your take on each piece. I think it is fascinating how each person has a different interpretation. My husband and I were discussing these the other day and I was blown away by what he saw which makes me curious how others see them. Please share, I would love to hear your thoughts.

Winter Moss

I took these photos last fall in the Eastern Oregon wilderness. I just love the contrast between the moss, snow, and weathered fence.

First Wedding

I don't do a lot of photography for other people, but lately the subject has been coming up quite a bit. I did a wedding yesterday and the coordinator of the venue asked me for business cards. It took me by surprise because I don't think of my photography as a business. In fact the only reason I was doing the photography for this particular wedding was because the bride is a friend of a friend. By chance, however, several months ago I had the opportunity to get free business cards and rather than let that pass by I decided to get cards printed with information about my art. I thought, at the time, if I ever enter my work in another show they could come in handy, and since they were free... why not?! It worked out well. I was able to provide some cards for the coordinator to add to her directory.

This year has been full photo opportunities for me. My sister's pregnancy photos, family photos for two friends, and a wedding. It has been quite the whirl wind for this amateur. I have to say I find it much easier to take photos for family than anyone else. I think I put less pressure on myself to get it right and in the end the photos come out much better.

The wedding yesterday got me thinking about some of the past weddings I have done and some of my favorite photos from those weddings. Here are some of my favorites from the very first wedding I did. The bride is an amazingly beautiful young woman and she was a wonderful inspiration. I couldn't have asked for better subjects for my first wedding.

Flood Relief

I follow the blog of a woman from Owego, NY where there has been major flooding this month. She has set up a relief fund to help raise money for those in need. Her goal is to raise $4900, you can read more about her story here. You can also find a button in the upper right hand corner of my blog, just click on it and it will direct you. If you would like to help spread the word please add the button to your blog or website, you can grab the button here

A New Old Rug

Rather than spend a ton of money on a new rug, my mom decided to take the large white rug she already had and refurbish it. She cleaned the old rug and this last Sunday we spent the afternoon dying it. Neither of us have ever done something like this before so it was a lot of fun trying something new. I think it turned out pretty good. I can't wait to see what it looks like in her living room.

Dragonfly

I realized today I haven't yet shared a drawing of the bug which started my love of drawing with a permanent marker. The dragonfly is my favorite image to draw. I might call it my default doodle.

Grunge Daisy

It has been a while since I have broken out the permanent marker, so I was pleasantly surprised how fun it was to create this new piece of art. I also thought it would be fun to use some of the photo editing techniques I have been experimenting with lately to work in some digital editing. I actually hate drawing daisies because of all the petals, they make me crazy. This time I thought I might take a new approach in an effort to see if I could make it work... patience. It truly is amazing what a little patience can do.

Time Out!

Well, like it or not I have been forced to take a short time out from all normal activities. It still amazes me how a little pneumonia can knock you right off your feet. Despite my efforts to continue with every scheduled event I had on my calendar this last week, I was forced to cancel quite a few, including some photo editing and finishing a few oil paintings I had started several weeks ago. I am kinda bummed, to say the least. Normally when I am forced to take a sick day I look at it as an opportunity to work on some art or read a book... not this time. I just haven't been able to find the energy to put towards much of anything. There have been some high points. I got to attend both my girl's swim lessons, something I haven't gotten to do in the past. Down side is I forgot to take my camera so I didn't get any photos for their scrap books. Hopefully I will have another chance to get some pictures before they are done for the summer. Tomorrow it's back to work and I am hoping this also means I will have more art to share with you soon. For now I will continue to pray for energy and healing while I add more projects to my to-do list.

Continuing with my favorite travel photos, here are some I took in New Orleans earlier this year.

Traveling - Las Vegas, NV

Here are some more of my favorite travel photos. These are from our trip to Las Vegas, NV last year. As you can probably tell, I am often drawn to architecture and water.

Looking Up

There are certain things I love doing simply because they are relaxing. One of my top favorites is simply pausing long enough to enjoy the world around me. The painting I am sharing today is a reflection of these moments but it is also a reflection of who I am. I claim to have grown up a country girl. By all rights I am not sure this is entirely true, however in my heart it is most definitely who I am. While I can't say I ever lived on a farm, I did grow up in small towns and I worked a fair share of my younger years in the hay fields and raising cattle. Some of my fondest memories consist of sitting quietly listening to the wind in the trees and watching the clouds pass by. These moments are the inspiration for this watercolor painting. Watercolor is not a medium I work with very often but I do love experimenting. What I love about this painting is the perspective. I picture myself laying on my back under the tree looking up into the sky. The warm sun shining down as a cool breeze drifts by. A peaceful moment I can loose myself in.

Photography and Traveling

I am not sure if I am the only one with this problem, but I often struggle with documenting my travels. I am not good with journals and deciding what to take pictures of has always frustrated me. However, within the last five years I have discovered a new approach to photographing my travels. My goal is to seek out images which inspire me or capture my attention, rather than images which I think represent the location I am visiting. You know the ones, the stereotypical photographs you could easily purchase a postcard of instead of actually visiting the landmark. I have been amazed at how liberating this approach is. The pressure to capture the typical touristic image is gone and what is left is the desire to find new and exciting inspirations without worrying about relevance to location. Last year I had the chance to visit San Fransisco for a second time in my life, the first was in high school. While the pictures I took on my second trip may not represent the San Fransisco image, they do inspire me. It is through that inspiration I am able to connect to the memories of my trip. A much better outcome than those wannabe postcard images I used to strive for.

Abstract ... What?...

Abstract Expressionism has always been a mystery to me. I remember seeing Abstract Expressionist paintings the first time I visited the Portland Art Museum. I didn't linger too long, mostly because I didn't understand the intent. I know I am not the only one who wasn't getting it because my sister had made a similar comment when we visited the museum another time. It was only recently, through my study of art history, I have found a basis for understanding this style of art.

One theory on the subject I found enlightening is that of Clement Greenberg. Greenberg believed art should reflect the literal nature of the medium. In other words art should not attempt to be what it is not. This theory is based on nonfigurative expression through emotional discovery. The intent is to use the medium to express the artist's state of mind in order to draw on the emotions of the viewers. Abstract Expressionism is based on free thinking. This style of art was designed to lead the viewer emotionally, to discover a piece of art for themselves, and relate to it free from implied or structured thinking. Examples of this can be seen in the work of Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman, and Mark Rothko.

In the work of Jackson Pollock, it is the approach he took in expressing his thoughts on canvas which show the relationship to Greenberg's theory of art. There is no object, focal point, or distinct feature in Pollock's work. The splashes of paint, drops of color, and layered affect create such abstractness the only way to relate to his art is through emotions. Your mid isn't told what to think, through the inclusion of relateable objects or scenes, this makes the process of how the art was made distinctly more important in understanding the end result.

The color block, or color field, work of Newman and Rothko evoke a different sort of approach to the same concept. This time through color placement and, in Newman's work, color purity. Newman used bold color to express emotion where Rothko used color to tell a story allowing the viewer to direct their perception based on their relationship to the colors used. This theme is seen in the Post-Painterly Abstraction style art as well, where artists used a medium in its pure form, allowing its purity and inherent beauty to drive the formation of the art.

One common thread in all Abstract Expressionist art is the emotional connection with the state of mind. The artists paint what they feel, how they feel, providing canvases which are both full and minimal. What I mean is Abstract Expressionists painted in such a way which allowed the viewer to interact with the art from their own emotional connection. While the canvas was far from empty the viewer's emotions and state of mind would contribute to the overall effect of the art. Put another way, this would be similar to being given the alphabet and told to create a sentence. The art was a platform from which the viewer could go wherever their emotions led.

I have to confess it is extremely fun and liberating to create an Abstract Expressionistic piece.  These are often my favorite way to decompress from a long week or a difficult day. Yet, for a long time I found it hard to consider them worth calling art. I have developed a new perspective on this form of art and in the future I will take the time to linger longer and see what I find.

Favorite Photos

I thought it would be nice to follow up my last blog with some of my own photography. Here are some of my favorites.
